Dear Diary VII

Драги дневниче, Sarajevo 17th of August 1913.

Dear diary, what a week it’s been since the last time I tainted your pages with my pen. I have a great deal to write. My mind is racing and I have to try to retain every memory and thought. I feel the history of my life being written in these pages, and it’s my duty to my older self to preserve it.

Let me start with last Wednesday, when Perzie met with her superiors.

I’d arrived at the hospital extra early that day. I was anxious too, perhaps in solidary with Perzie. The meeting was scheduled for eight in the morning at Dr Horvát’s office. I arrived at the anteroom of the isolation area to find Nurse Cvjetićanin talking with the night shift staff, exchanging details for the medical care of patient J D 347.

“She didn’t accept any painkillers this morning,” said Nurse Cvjetićanin, passing me Perzie’s chart. “She seems to be fond of you, Olga. Maybe you can have a chat with her?”

“It’s an important day for her, Nurse Cvjetićanin. I’m sure she has her reasons.”

“Oh, it’s an important day for us too, believe me! I can’t wait for this nonsense to be over. All this secrecy and the waste of so many medical resources for one patient alone. She can march home and we can continue with our duties.”

The weeks working in isolation were taking their toll on Nurse Cvjetićanin. “You ought to accompany her to the meeting; I have too much to do,” Nurse Cvjetićanin said.

“Certainly, madam.” I turned around, walking towards the metal door dividing the anteroom from the infirmary.

Perzie was standing beside her bed, with her back turned to me, buttoning her shirt. She turned around and it appeared that something had shifted in her – she was wearing her military uniform, and she had a masculine energy emanating from her.

Her cobalt jacked fitted perfectly over her broad shoulders, with its golden epaulettes and chevrons adorning the arms, emulating her blonde hair. She looked pensive as she placed her sash over her shoulder and across her chest, pinning it with the breast badges close to her medals. She made an impressive sight.

“You haven’t taken your medication, lieutenant,” I said.

“I’ll accept my fate no matter how painful it may be. Besides, morphine makes me less aware of my surroundings, and I need to be fully focused.” She sat down on a chair to put on her boots.

“I’ll accompany you to the meeting, if that’s OK with you?” I asked.

She nodded. “Did ‘Nurse Grumpy’ tell you to do so?” she asked.

“What? She’s not that bad, is she?” I laughed.

“We have an understanding. She isn’t happy I’m here, and I’m not excited to be here either, but hopefully it will change now. Ready?” she said, standing up. She towered over me.

The fragile patient, unconscious and injured until a few weeks ago, had given way to this mighty soldier, solemn and sharp, ready for war. I was mesmerised by her virility. She
